Glossary
Brickmould A piece of either wood or metal, which acts as trim, yet is integrated into the face of the exterior jamb.
Capillary tube A small, surgical steel tube that is hidden in the sash of the unit that allows the sealed unit to balance the air space pressure with the current atmospheric pressure.
Desiccant Porous crystalline substance used to absorb moisture and solvent vapors from the air space of insulating glass units.
Direct Set A non-sashed window where the glass is glazed directly into the jamb.
Dual Sealed Units Sealed, insulating glass units made with a primary seal and an outer secondary seal.
Emissivity The relative ability of a surface to radiate heat.
Glaze To fit a window frame with glass.
Glazing The type of glass used to fit a sash or panel.
Grills A decorative grid installed on or between the glass lites, that does not actually divide the glass.
Jamb The frame of a window that holds the sash and allows it to operate.
Jamb depth The distance from the interior of the jamb to back side of the brickmould or nail flange.
Keeper A clasp that is attached to the sash so the jamb may lock the sash.
Lite A unit of glass in a window or door; it is enclosed by the sash or by grills and muntin bars. Also called a "pane."
Low E2 A special coating on the glass that allows the unit to emiss radiant heat.
Mullion A horizontal or vertical member, at the jamb, that joins together two or more windows or doors. Also called a "mull."
Nail Flange A tab, usually made of metal, that encompasses the jamb at a perpendicular angle and allows the unit to be nailed to the structure.
Sash A frame that is attached to the jamb into which glass products are glazed, i.e. the operating component in a window.

TDL (True Divided Lite) This is a grill which does separate each adjacent pane in the sash.
Trim Set This is the generic name for a set of door hardware.
