Loewen Site
About Us
Every Loewen window and door mirrors a fascinating journey.
It begins at the turn of the twentieth century on the lonely prairies of southern Manitoba. Here in the village of Steinbach, a group of Mennonite families, including the Loewens, had migrated from Russia to begin their lives anew.
Among the first things made by the Loewen millwork for the fast-growing community were humble items like church pews and bee-keeping equipment. But soon, windows and doors became our specialties...
Today, three generations later, Loewen is some 1200 employees strong — and creates elegantly wrought windows and doors for discriminating homeowners around the globe.
The key to our success is simple: while we've remained faithful to our roots — particularly in our deeply held traditional craft values and our work ethic, we've also grown to embrace new technologies and ideas from places as diverse as Europe, Japan, America and, of course, Canada.
And so, we've become a company where seeming opposites exist in harmony: the old and the new; delicate beauty and a steely toughness; and pride in craft tempered by an abiding humility.
The result is windows and doors that possess a rich heritage, a striking beauty, even a kind of soul you won't find anywhere else in the world.

Our History
1867 -- Canada becomes a country.
1871 -- Village of Steinbach, Manitoba, is incorporated.
1878-1900s -- Mennonites from the Milk River region of Russia -- the Loewen family among them -- immigrate to Steinbach and elsewhere in Canada's "East Reserve."
1905 -- Loewen begins with the entrepreneurial vision of C.T. Loewen, who had learned sawyer skills from his immigrant father. The vast Boreal forest near Steinbach and the emerging markets in Winnipeg and across the prairies translate into potential in C.T.'s entrepreneurial vision. Among the first items made by Loewen Millwork for the burgeoning communities are bee-keeping equipment and church pews.
1930-1945 -- During the period of rural electrificaiton, Loewen turns out hydropole crossmembers by the thousands. Increasingly, however, windows and doors become our specialty and our passion.
1945-1958 -- In the post-war years, home construction booms across Canada. Many Canadians building homes take advantage of the new concept of pre-assembled windows and doors rather than having carpenters custom-build them on site. Loewen focuses on meeting this demand.
1958-1970 -- Under the leadership of Cornelius Loewen (son of C.T. and father of current CEO Charles), Loewen becomes the region's leading employer. The prairie provinces and northwestern Ontario are our prime markets.
1980s -- Third generation Loewen brothers Charles, Paul and Clyde decide to augment our commpany's unique qualities -- our Old World craftsmanship and work ethic -- with the most advanced production technology available. New horizons begin to open up and the Loewen brand becomes synonymous with distinctive quality.
Late 1980s -- Loewen arrives at a crossroad. Other leading window manufacturers are switching to vinyl windows and doors. Should we? Loewen opts for the road less traveled -- insisting on premium quality materials instead. The decision to exclusively use Douglas Fir accentuates our upscale cachet.
1989 -- Loewen goes to Japan, where there's a high traditional and cultural appreciation of elegant woodwork.
1990 -- Chicago branch office opens, giving Loewen better access to the vast American upscale market.
2001 -- 157,000 square-foot factory addition is built. It is the twelfth and single largest expansion since 1960.
2001 -- Tree Canada Foundation presents the prestigious Eterne Award jointy to the C.P. Loewen Family Foundation and Loewen Windoews in recognition of the highly successful Stand Tall Schoolground Forestation and Education program. The Eterne Award is acknowledgement by Tree Canada of Loewen's environmental leadership and commitment to taking action on global climate change through the planting of trees in Canada.
2003 -- Loewen introduces 10 new products and launches a new communication campaign to express our unique personality; how we are a nearly 100 year-old company that embraces traditional millwork and small town values -- focused relentlessly on quality -- but simultaneously holding a deeply held drive towards the latest in manufacturing philosophy and technology. Loewen is old made new.

Why Loewen
When you live and work in a part of the world where arctic winds come howling down from the polar icecaps all winter, you learn how to build exceedingly sturdy, energy efficient windows.
By using only Douglas Fir, we ensure that a certain imperviousness to the elements is built into our windows from the start.
But we also take a number of extra steps to enhance this robust wood's naturally tough characteristics... More
For instance, we treat all of our wood with a special sealant. This not only makes it even more water repellent and decay resistant; it helps stain and paint bond securely to the surface.
And, because many of our customers choose metal clad exteriors, we offer durable extruded aluminum cladding in a rich palette of baked-on finishes.
In addition, Loewen uses thicker glass than other window manufacturers, making ours better insulated, more soundproof and more impact resistant.
Equally important to the unmatched quality of our construction, however, is the enduring beauty of our designs.
You see, our people don't just brainstorm; they are given the freedom to "trystorm" -- the ultimate goal being the creation of innovative designs that keep abreast of current fashion trends, while simultaneously transcending them. So no matter what Loewen windows you select for your home, they will stand the test of time.

Better Materials
By using only Douglas Fir, we ensure that a strong natural resistance to the elements is built into our windows from the start.
To avoid unsightly finger jointing, Loewen makes sure that interior wood surfaces are finished with clear fir. Our double mortise and tenon jointing significantly improves strength and structural integrity. Our superior corner construction keeps the window square and true.
Another built-in quality feature is Loewen's laminated sash. While maintaining a clear interior wood finish, Loewen permanently combines separate wood components into a single unit. This engineered construction dramatically increases strength and stability while simultaneously reducing the amount of wood consumed in window production.
Our thick extruded aluminum cladding retains its shape, resists denting and bending, and lasts longer than roll formed aluminum. Loewen's cladding is set away from the underlying wood, creating an air space that improves thermal performance.
Plus, our stronger glass is considerably more resistant to the stresses caused by fluctuations in temperature.
Below the sealed glass unit of every Loewen window is a hidden venting channel. This channel is routed into the wood base to protect both seal and wood against internal moisture accumulation. By allowing air to circulate, condensation that may have formed below the seal can escape.

Why Douglas Fir
Unlike other window makers, we use only West Coast Douglas Fir in our frames and sashes instead of pine. This tightly grained (and plentiful) wood does more than just give our windows a richer, warmer texture; it's also naturally tough and resilient, yet remarkably workable. Meaning it's ideal for precision milling and capable of holding the smallest, most intricate detailing.
Every Loewen wood component is treated with a water repellant/wood preservative mixture, before assembly, to enhance the wood's natural resistance to moisture absorption, decay and insect infestation. One of the hardest of the softwoods, Douglas Fir exceeds pine in fastener retention, density, strength and impact resistance.
* Douglas Fir is North America's most plentiful softwood species, accounting for one-fifth of the continent's total softwood reserves.
* Roughly 88% of the Douglas Fir purchased by Loewen comes from forestland that is Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) certified. In addition to SFI certification, many Douglas Fir suppliers in Canada are ISO 14001 and/or CSA certified.
* Douglas Fir is measurably denser, harder and stronger than other species such as Western Hemlock and Ponderosa Pine, used by other window makers. Douglas Fir is 32% and 70% harder than Western Hemlock and Ponderosa Pine respectively, and 35% and 64% more resistant to impact. Douglas Fir's durability is vastly superior.
* Tests have shown Douglas Fir to have outstanding mechanical properties for fastener retention.
The terms "hardwood" and "softwood" are somewhat misleading. The wood of a Douglas Fir tree is harder and denser than many hardwoods even though it is a softwood. How? The name hardwood is the name given to those species whose seedpods are encased in a hard shell. Softwoods are those that produce seedpods (cones) that are soft, or not encased in a hard shell. Hence the confusion. Regardless of its group affiliation, Douglas Fir ranks as one of the hardest woods -- harder than 96% of all softwoods and 20% of hardwoods among North American species.
Cladding & Colors
Loewen uses extruded aluminum cladding to better protect your window and door exteriors -- as well as to eliminate the need for painting. Our thick extruded aluminum cladding retains its shape, resists denting and bending, and lasts longer than roll-formed aluminum. In addition, Loewen's cladding is set away from the underlying wood, creating an air space that improves thermal performance.
The broad variation in Loewen sizes, shapes and designs and the demanding environmental conditions that our product encounters requires an alloy that has the ability to:
* withstand serious impact without sustaining damage
* allow intricate extrusion detailing
* provide the malleability necessary to clad the many beautiful sizes and shapes we offer
* deliver the unequaled environmental durability that aluminum is known for (It's no accident that most North American highway traffic signs are made of aluminum)
Aluminum is a versatile material that supplies all of the critical performance characteristics required by our premium product line. Care is taken to purchase alloys that are specially formulated to meet the design parameters needed in our production process.
As for colors, our aluminum cladding is available in a wide array of tasteful, durable colors. Our deep colors are created from Kynar-based paint that have been enhanced with ceramic pigmentation -- meaning our finishes will resist fading even when placed in the most difficult climatic conditions; including environments with extreme temperature variations and acidic pollutants.
Glass & Glazing
Loewen uses thicker glass than most other window manufacturers, making ours better insulated, more soundproof and more impact resistant. Plus our stronger glass is considerably more resistant to the stresses caused by fluctuations in temperature.
Loewen windows and glass inserts for doors are available with numerous glazing options: Heat-Smart ¬ Plus Window Systems 1, 2 and 3, the Tranquility¬ Sound Reduction System and Impact Glazing Systems.
Loewen's Heat-Smart¬ Plus Window Systems use argon gas and Low-E technology to save you heating and cooling costs. There are three Heat-Smart¬ Plus Window Systems, each delivering a different level of thermal performance. Choose the system that best meets your need.
Tranquility¬ Sound Reduction Systems have a 6.5 mm interior laminated glass (which is thicker than industry standard), giving enhanced sound-deadening, a 13/16" air space, and a 1/4" (6 mm) exterior glass. This glazing system can be installed on any Loewen window or door product that accepts triple pane sealed units.
Loewen's Impact Glazing System is designed to meet the stringent protocol of Dade County, Florida. This special glazing system uses a combination of laminated glass (an interlayer bonded between two sheets of glass) and high strength sealant, to secure the laminated glass to the sash or frame.
Additional Glazing Standards:
* Loewen uses 1/8" double strength glass, giving vast improvement to strength, durability and clarity.
* All standard sealed units feature machine applied butyl primary sealant and polyisobutyl secondary sealant. This reduces the chance of seal failure, improves gas retention and increases strength.
* All Loewen glazing is done without visible exterior caulking for a clean, aesthetically pleasing appearance that will stand up over time.
* All standard Loewen sealed units are Argon gas filled with no spacer bar piercing.
* Glazing fabrication is fully automated.
* Our automated glazing assembly line allows robots to excel at what they do best — precise, repetitive tasks — and lets our skilled operators concentrate on the issues of quality and performance that training and experience can best determine. The robotic line creates Loewen sealed units with the glass in a vertical position, which prevents the irregularity caused by deflection (glass sagging during production) that can rob units of their hermetic seal over time.
A small but vitally important feature is built into each Loewen sash — a channel to allow the free movement of air around the seal unit. This drains away moisture and helps to prevent the build-up of condensation.

Performance
What's the value of having the most beautiful windows if they don't perform?
At Loewen, we strive to provide our customers with "the world's most inspiring windows and doors" -- but as we inspire, we must also confirm confidence. As with all good design, form follows function.
That's why we focus our attention and craftsmanship not only on the aesthetics, but on the product's performance including thermal, air and water and strength.
At the center of it all is energy efficiency. We strive to be respected stewards of the environment in the manufacturing process, so it makes sense that we work with outside organizations to certify that our products help you minimize your energy usage.

Certifications & Standards
"Open participation in industry organizations strengthens not only our industry but ultimately our business, as well. Active participation is part of our responsibility as manufacturers." These words, and the sentiment behind them, are part of the reason why the Canadian Window and Door Manufacturers Association (CWDMA) has created the CP Loewen Award, which is presented annually to recognize major contributions to the development of the CWDMA and the window and door industry in Canada.
Loewen submits products to an extensive number of outside councils and organizations for evaluation. These groups not only help assure consistent product quality, but also provide insights to improve the overall performance of our windows and doors.

HeatSmart¬
Loewen's Heat-Smart¬ Plus Window Systems use argon gas and Low-E technology to save you heating and cooling costs. The heat reflective characteristics of Low-E coating and argon gas, the natural insulating properties of the wood frame and sash and Loewen's advanced sealing and construction methods result in great thermal performance. Our Heat-Smart¬ Plus Window Systems are designed not only to save heating and cooling energy costs, but also to reduce condensation and that "cold" feeling some windows project. We understand that your favourite place in the house to relax with a book will likely be right next to a Loewen window, so we've designed your comfort into our product performance standards.
There are three Heat-Smart¬ Plus Window Systems, each delivering a different level of thermal performance. Choose the system that best meets your needs.
Heat-Smart¬ Plus 1
Good. Double glazed, with one layer of Low E "Squared" coating and 1/2" air space filled with argon gas*.
Heat-Smart¬ Plus 2

UV Transmittance
This chart measures the percentage of ultraviolet radiated wavelengths allowed to be transmitted through the glazed product.
Tranquility¬
Tranquility¬ Sound Reduction Systems have a 13/16" air space and thicker 1/4" (6 mm) exterior glass. This glazing system can be installed on any Loewen window or door product that accepts triple pane sealed units.
Whether your situation calls for the extreme sound attenuation required to protect you from airport sound pollution (the standard which this remarkable product has been designed to meet) or if you simply want to screen out some of the ambient noise in your urban setting, wind noise, etc. — Tranquility offers an elegant solution.
* Unique glazing system that greatly reduces sound transmission
* 13/16" Argon gas-filled cavity
* UV Protection
* Tranquility is available in dual pane, utilizing Loewen's triple pane sash
Tranquility glazing is available in all Loewen products that can be made in triple pane configuration
Sound Transmission Coefficient
The STC rating is a way to rate the performance of a glazing system using a single number that represents the Sound Transmission Loss performance over a range of frequencies. The higher the number, the greater the noise reduction.
Impact Glazing
This special glazing system uses a combination of laminated glass (an interlayer bonded between two sheets of glass) and high strength sealant to secure the laminated glass to the sash or frame.
Impact Glazing was developed to meet the stringent protocol of Dade County, Florida, and is now available for those who need extra protection from coastal storms and who also need to meet coastal code requirements. Designed to withstand with gale-force winds, airborne debris and horizontal rain, Impact Glazing offers peace of mind for security conscious homeowners.
Our People
Perhaps the most important distinguishing feature of our windows and doors is the artistry and obsessive perfectionism of the people who craft them. In their skilled hands (aided by the most advanced production technology available), wood, metal and glass somehow magically meld, flow and even soar.
Our people don't just brainstorm; they are given the freedom to "trystorm" -- the ultimate goal being the creation of innovative designs that keep abreast of current fashion trends, while simultaneously transcending them.
Consequently, Loewen windows look and feel more like fine furniture than they do a merely functional item. Which means you may have trouble deciding which is more inspiring: the view outside your windows, or the windows themselves.
Environment
Environmental stewardship is closely aligned with many of the core values that are present in our company. Loewen is committed to this stewardship, in both our product and manufacturing processes.
* We manufacture only wood windows, thereby using a renewable resource, an efficient natural insulator and production methods that consume less energy than PVC.
* We recycle virtually all of the wood waste created in manufacturing. We also recycle glass, aluminum, vinyl weatherstrip, solvents, motor oil and paper. We even heat our plant with sawdust and sell the remainder to local farms for animal bedding.
* While we actively seek to reduce-reuse-recycle, we understand the real world dynamics of downcycling and so we aggressively design systems that are optimally efficient in consumption and strive to produce windows of the highest quality so as to assure long product life. To this end, our products are made to be repaired and can even be removed and re-installed. Once again, product quality is at the cross-roads of efficiency and responsible design.
* Our products are empirically shown to be among the industry's best in terms of thermal performance (NFRC tested).
* We are the 2001 recipient of the Tree Canada Foundation Eterne Award, honoring us for "environmental leadership and commitment to taking action on global climate change through the planting of trees."
* Loewen CEO, Charles Loewen, is one of fourteen members of the Canadian Forest Sector Advisory Council, whose mandate is to work towards reduced CO2 emissions in the forest sector.
* The majority of the wood fiber used in the production of Loewen products is derived from Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) certified forestland.
* Internally, the Loewen Environmental Council (LEC) audits company activities with a view to ensure that the highest possible standards of environmental stewardship are represented in company policies and actions.
Products
To our way of thinking, a window should be more than just a source of natural light and air ... It should be a source of inspiration. Which is why we go to extraordinary lengths to make every Loewen window a work of art in and of itself. Consequently, you may have trouble deciding which is more inspiring: the view outside your windows or the windows themselves.
Windows
Casement
The case for our casement windows
Casement windows swing open (like a door) to provide superior ventilation, while the large glass areas provide unobstructed views and bathe your rooms in a flood of natural light.
Loewen makes three styles of casement windows: Traditional, Mission¬ and French Chateau. Grilles and divided lites give you the freedom to dramatically change the look of these windows to suit your individual taste. From the beauty of our clear West Coast Douglas Fir interiors to the superb weather seal, the look and precision engineering of Loewen Casement Windows will delight you for years to come.
Awning
The remarkable versatility of our awning windows
Awning windows open out from the bottom, letting air circulate freely while providing a unique protective shield to keep the rain out.
You can order Loewen Awning Windows single, stacked, side-by-side, or matched with picture windows -- letting you create the look that is exactly right for you. And, of course, Loewen Awning Windows are complete with quick release sashes and heavy-duty sash locks that provide a snug, weathertight seal and outstanding thermal performance.
Double Hung
The old made new again: Loewen double hung windows
Opening from both the top and the bottom, double hung windows are proof that certain classic looks never go out of style. And we have taken steps to make these timeless beauties perform better than ever.
Thanks to our innovative smooth action balance system, for example, Loewen Double Hung Windows open and close effortlessly.
A special tilt latching system also provides inward tilting of the sash for easier cleaning -- or complete removal. And for added protection against the elements, our double hung windows are complete with a fibreglass exterior sill.
Sliding
Another breath of fresh air: Our sliding windows
Our sliding windows combine the wide vistas provided by picture windows with a simple design that allows you to slide them open and shut.
Each Loewen Sliding Window comes standard with a removable screen that keeps insects out of your home -- as well as out of the sliding track.
And, as always, a variety of looks are available -- thanks to our simulated divided lites, grilles between glass, or our selection of removable grilles. Other options include a low maintenance metal clad finish in a variety of colors.
Picture
Picture perfect picture windows
Loewen Picture Windows are designed to give you maximum views with a minimum of wood framework.
Picture windows, of course, do not open. But you can create the ideal combination of view and ventilation by pairing them with Loewen Awning, Sliding or Casement Windows.
Bow & Bay
Make your home feel bigger with our bow and bay windows
Unlike other options, bow and bay windows actually add valuable living space to your home. How much extra space is up to you.
Loewen Bay Windows can be built at one of three fixed angles: 34, 45 or 90 degrees. These angles determine how much extra space you gain by controlling how far the window extends.
Loewen even makes a bay window designed specifically for a kitchen. And all of our bow and bay windows have optional heads and seats available in either paint grade fir or stain grade clear oak.
Access
Our innovative access windows
These windows are ideal in situations where access to the outside is restricted -- such as multiple story homes and commercial applications.
Our unique design allows the sash to rotate 180 degrees outside the window frame, leaving your draperies and blinds untouched and making exterior cleaning a breeze.
All Loewen Access Windows come standard with a removable screen, metal cladding in a range of colors, and hardware in a choice of Bronze, Sandstone or White finishes.
Custom & Specialty
When something unique is called for, there is no substitute for Loewen's nearly 100 years of crafting and European heritage. No substitute either for the skill of designers and engineers who excel at state-of-the-art window and production technology to create that one special window that will make the whole room sparkle.

Doors
Sliding Patio
Open up new possibilities with our sliding patio doors
Functioning like large moving windows, Loewen Sliding Patio Doors can open up the walls in your home to dramatic new possibilities -- our spectacular 7-panel, 24' wide model, for example.
To make our doors both visually striking and easier to operate, Loewen uses laminated wood construction, double mortise and tenon corner joints, thick, tempered safety glass -- as well as smooth tandem ball bearing rollers. Our door panels are unusually thick at 2 1/4", allowing us to offer triple glazing which is unique in the industry.
In addition to our traditional style, we also offer a French style which has a taller bottom rail. This more closely matches our French Terrace Door.
For added security, Loewen builds an anti-lift latch into every patio door. An optional foot lock is also available, as is automatic three-point multi-locking hardware.
Swinging Terrace
Our swinging terrace doors will expand your horizons
No other hinged door can capture as expansive a view as a Loewen Terrace Door, thanks to our large glass areas and all wood construction.
We offer you two styles to choose from: Traditional and French. Traditional terrace doors hinge in the middle so that one panel is fixed, and the other operates. By contrast, French terrace doors are hinged on the outside to allow both doors to operate from the middle.
Outswing versions of both styles are available as options.
LiftSlide Door System
Bring the outdoors in.
Its patented European-designed roller system allows expansive glass panels (weighing up to 500 pounds or more) to roll smoothly and easily when opening and closing. This not only gives you a panoramic view, it opens up living space in your home, letting the great outdoors in.
The way it works is elegantly simple. To open, push the handle down to raise the panel off the embedded floor roller track. To close, pull the handle up to lower the panel and create a weather tight barrier.
The roller track is set into the sub-flooring, projecting just 3/16" above the finished floor -- affording a smooth and unobstructed transition to the outside of your home. And the Loewen LiftSlide system can be built in straight configurations stacked side by side, or pocketed into the walls.
While the LiftSlide is a unique door product, it is fully compatible with other Loewen windows and doors.
Custom
When something unique is called for, there is no substitute for Loewen's nearly 100 years of crafting and European heritage. No substitute either for the skill of designers and engineers who excel at state-of-the-art window and production technology to create that one special window that will make the whole room sparkle.

Please contact the dealer from whom the product was originally purchased. They will be pleased to assist you with any questions you may have. If you need further assistance, you may call 1-800-563-9367 or 1-204-326-6446 (outside of North America) and you will be directed to a service advisor. We will work with you to ensure that your Loewen windows are to your complete satisfaction. To assist us, please provide your location, a description of the issue at hand and, if possible, your original order number.
2. Can I get my windows fixed if the warranty has expired?
Yes. Loewen dealers and service crews are in place to provide service repairs on products that are beyond the warranty period. Please call 1-800-563-9367 or 1-204-326-6446 (outside of North America) and you will be directed to a service advisor.
3. Why is there condensation on the glass of my windows?
Window condensation is an indication of excess humidity in your home. It is a problem associated with several conditions that can be changed to help reduce indoor moisture. Here are some simple steps that will reduce humidity:
* If the furnace is equipped with a humidifier or if you operate a separate humidifier, turn it down (or off) until the condensation is reduced.
* Cover cooking pots to reduce steam.
* Don't hang clothes indoors to dry.
* Vent the clothes dryer to the outdoors.
* Take shorter showers or baths.
* Reduce the number of house plants.
* Don't store firewood indoors.

Improve air circulation:
* Remove screens for winter.
* Open drapes or blinds over windows.
* Move furniture or objects blocking warm and cold air registers.
* Run the furnace fan continuously at low speed.

Increase ventilation:
* Use the kitchen exhaust fan while cooking and the bathroom exhaust fan while bathing. The fans should be vented to the outdoors.
* Briefly open windows or exterior doors to reduce localized condensation.
* Keep fresh air intakes open. Homes today are built to ensure less air infiltration. The lack of new air in the home will increase the humidity and chance of condensation. As much as 36 litres (8 gallons) of moisture per week are released from new building and construction materials during the first 18 months of occupancy. Improperly maintained humidity levels, unbalanced heating systems and appliances are the main causes of condensation after the drying out period of the home has been completed.
Replacement Windows
When it's time to replace those old double-hung wood windows, you have two choices: complete window replacement or installing Renovation-Pak Window Sash Replacement Kits. If your wood window frames are straight, square and in good condition, replacement of the old window sash may be all you need. In which case, Loewen Renovation-Paks are the answer. They are quick and easy to install from inside your home when you follow the step-by-step instructions included with each kit, and you won't need special tools. Loewen Renovation-Paks also let you keep your original window mouldings. Interior Douglas Fir surfaces can be stained or painted to match an existing color scheme. Exterior surfaces are primed, ready for finishing. Loewen Renovation-Pak Kits feature a full-length retainer system that improves air seal and smooths the window's operation. The sealed glass units are dual pane (1/8" thick glass panes with 1/2" air space). Loewen also offers Metal Clad Brickmould, available for renovation or new construction.
